The Septuagint Old Testament is the same Old Testament that Catholics still use today.

This is a quote from a very PROTESTANT website:
"Luke 1:27 This Greek word parthenos (virgin) is used in Isa. 7:14 inThe Septuagint, the Greek Old Testament translation which Jesus read and quoted."
http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?book_id=49&version=45#en-AMP-24920

But, the first Protestants rejected that version because of a post Jesus era council (Javneh in the year A.D. 90) of Jewish leaders (the ones who rejected Jesus as Messiah) decided at that time that they were not going to use the Septuagint Old Testament anymore.

The first Protestants rationalized that it was because the 7 books that they threw out were not in Hebrew.

However, the recent discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls has revealed ancient Hebrew writings of those 7 books. But the Protestants still reject them. The way I see it, if the Septuagint Old Testament was good enough for Jesus, it's good enough for me.

impossble_dream...The first Protestant, Martin Luther didn't like the fact that the Septuagint has unmistakable reference to praying for the dead. The doctrine of Purgatory is very clear in these books. That didn't fit with the Protestant doctrine, so those books were conveniently thrown out.

The evidence of what you claim is inconclusive, regarding "the Greek Old Testament translation which Jesus read and quoted."

Since the oldest dated Scriptures of the NT are written in Greek, it can't be determined conclusively. If Yeshua (Jesus) quoted the OT exactly (in Hebrew) and his words were translated into Greek (as was the OT) in the same time period, it's quite possible that his words recorded in the Greek NT correspond exactly with the Septuagint.

Which means he may not have quoted the Septuagint.

Do you often jump to conclusions without evidence? Why are you fixated on Greek? You think that the Hebrew is inferior?

Personally I think you're right, but use whichever version you want; the message is the same. And yes, the books the Protestants pulled from the Bible do strengthen the case for the existance of Purgatory. Nonetheless, it's fairly irrelevant. We won't find out for sure until we die, and whether it exists or not shouldn't affect the way in which we live. I know the Protestants on this site can be...exasperating, but try to be patient with them. Also, remember that not all Protestants are ignorant and prejudiced. Take care that you don't fall into the same trap of stereotyping others.

So is the Septuagint the one you read, or are you working from an English translation of it? I doubt Jesus would have been reading English.

I read the Apocrypha and it doesnt say anything that would make me think Catholicism is true. They arent bad books, but they do not support most Catholic teachings so why do Catholics keep bringing them up? The Bible says the same thing with or without them.
