By giving up religion. The ancients, around the time of the creation of Christianity, looked to Greek philosophers like Plato and Plotinus for a clarification of the emerging Christian philosophy. Plotinus believed that God was beyond "being" and couldn't be known through rational exploration. So knowing God can only be a spiritual accomplishment, and not at all. Borrowing from Eastern philosophy, I say be still as the TAO and you will know God.

When I was a little girl, I grew up in a house where people were cold to each other. My parents didn't like each other much, and my sisters and I didn't get along....I once told a person, after I'd become an adult, that I felt like I had been "dropped behind enemy lines" living in that house.
I used to read books in the back of my mother's closet. When I heard people arguing and yelling and saying unkind things, I thought, there must be an opposite of this. There has to be love, kindness, warmth, justice, mercy, those things. And that's when I would feel this "presence". Of course, I had no idea what it was then.
Many years later, someone brought me to Calvary Chapel. I began to study the bible. One day, I recognized who that presence was with me when I was a little girl. It was Jesus. He was those things. Love, joy, mercy, kindness, forgiveness, compassion. In fact, He was the perfection of all of them. I also recognized that presence that had been with me when I was so small and so unhappy, in that closet. It was God.

It just happened- nothing earth shattering. One day I decided to start reading the Bible I had received when I was a child. And slowly, my eyes were opened to the truth- that Jesus is the Son of God, died for my sins and rose on the 3rd day.
Once that truth penetrated my spirit, I was uncontrollably hungry for the Word and read everything I could.
It was the best thing that has every happened to me and I can honestly say, I would never not believe in Jesus. I also vaguely remember my life from before- proving once again that we are new creations in Christ Jesus.

I heard a knock at my door, It was nothing, I'd ever heard before.
It was in my heart, my life was not working for me. I had this and that all going in different directions. I was exhausted and there had to be a way to come to terms with everything, you see I had found out i had tourettes syndrome and it blew me away. the only thing left to do, I knew what it was. I went to my local church and i asked for prayer. I felt much better after I spoke to the Rev.and decided to go to church the next Sunday. the morning of that next Sunday i was up, very early all excited to go, you see I was ready to turn things around, meanwhile since i was up already i wrote how i felt. turns out i wrote a poem in prayer to God. " this is coming from me' I put it down and went to sleep. later i woke up again and went to service, while they were singing a song, anyone who wanted to come forward was welcome. I did, I dedicate my life to God. now things are entirely different for me. and the rest is history. as they say. I'm now a christian soldier. I feel things i had never felt in my life. I was forgiven and I like myself again thank you Jesus! He worked a miracle that day.

I came to know god as a nonexistent fairy tail. I always have. I looked into religion, and was made certain atheism is correct.

My best friend in 6th grade had his parents take me the church every Sunday and Wednesday night. It was there that brainwashing really started.
