XC bikes are among the most popular ----consider the kind of terrain you would hammer first, then if you think you got the proper safety gear ( helmets, shins, gloves ), the guts, the strength----then RIDE!!! Its COOL to buy a dual suspension mountain bike---Anything like TREK ( Session 7 ),Kona Coiler , Gary Fisher Mullet,Mongoose Black Diamond Double, would be really a BLAST. For the parts log on to www.pricepoint.com, www.jensonusa.com or www.cambriabikes.com---TONS to choose drom with sweet bargains!

There is no 'best'. The best will be the bike you are most happy with and comfy on. A lightweight race bike might be the best for someone who weights 9stone where as it'll just snap under someone weighting 20stone, for example.
Best bet is to go into a number of shops and try and test ride as many as you can. Then you will get a feel for what you are after.
