Im 15 1/2 and I have dark brown hair. I would really love to get blonde or carmel highlights but my dad disapproves greatly of it. Any suggestions on naturally lightening it. Or maybe even some way to convince him that dying your hair is normal. (he's seen many people whos highlights turned out bad and look as if they were "skunks" so he thinks thats what everyones will look like)

put lemon juice on it and sit out in the sun with the lemon still on it. this slightly fades over time (unlike highlights), leaving you with no roots.

also, as this is 100% natural (yet strongly effective), so your dad will probably approve.

you can alway's use lemon's.
other then that that ask another qustion even right here about if anyone has had a bad experiance with highlights or dieing their hair.
then if the out come is what i will expect it to be
show your dad the results and tell him that stomping on one's creative style can cause more greater damage then good i have seen more bad happen from parents saying NO to a style issue when the child (or adolesent) turns around tring to find their own way of doing things if not then when they trun 18 they do it out of a overdose on freedom and really mess up.
I was a military brat growing up and my father would never let me do that when i asked him if i could make my blonde hair darker he said no so i went out and got blue pink and purple hair dye , and yes it was cute in high school but then i was lucky that it didnt go drasticly wrong i saw others do the same kind of thing and came back with frize or nothing left cause they didnt know what they were doing.
PS my experiance is not one to be followed going against my father's wishes did get me a 3 months house arrest
so talk to him if you still feel strongly about in a week or two tell him you would rather pay the extra to have it done professionally then do it on your own come up with the money your self to have it done in a salon show him the cash and tell him "your" plan and he may be more calm about it.

Be careful of the skunk look, blonde highlights on dark hair can look so cheap and tacky - not to mention the roots...I would go for a darker caramel or biscuit..try telling this to your dad, say you dont want to lighten it so much, just add highlights so you can look and feel good and take care of yourself. Tell him youve thought it over and decided blonde isnt right for you (then he will assume this is because of what he's been saying, and not that it wouldnt suit you) and say you're willing for him to come to the salon and check them out (he probably wont want to). You can buy home streaking kits or dye that is more like hair gel you place where you want and then use a hair dryer to mask roots or lighten a little bit - but i wouldnt advise these, or lemon juice, they're nothing like a proffessional dye and lemon would strip your hair natural oils and leave it defenceless...bad if you like to brush or use stylers on it.
Good luck though, dont go too light.

use lemon juice in your hair, it pulls out your natual highlights. also if u want it to fade and get lighter, you can use dish soap. but only use it a few times, it makes your hair dry. also you can use vinergar, which will also give your hair a nice shine to it, and tea bags help with brown hair to lighten and brighten it.
my mom was like that when i was your age, i did the same things as you, soon or later i end up having nice natural looking blonde highlights.
---- a tip to tell your dad is, lessons are learned threw experience, and hair grows back.
~ Good luck*

There isn't really any way to lighten hair without using chemicals. If you are to use chemicals, get it done professionally. It is *extremely* difficult to bleach dark hair, and almost impossible to at home without an orange result.

well make sure to get them professionally done. Maybe you can just get 5 or 6 foils done, that is what I do, and it's only 20 bucks. I have tried home stuff and it damamged my hair. I think most teens do it at home and that's why it looks so stupid. I am sorry but I don't know of anything natural that would work for dark brown hair.

um try squeesing a lemon into a cup (make sure to strain the pulp) then add in ur conditioner....mesage into ur hair and then.put a shower cap on and let it sit under the hot water for ten minutes or so......i do this alot...the acid brings out the natural color of ur hair but it intensifies it..makin it brighter almost like highlights! hope this helps! and i hope it answered wat u were talking about....?

can we say ten points maybe?:D

AND IT DOESNT STRIP UR HAIR!!!

Well my mom and I said that I have to wait till im 16. I decided that instead of highlight I would get lowlights. Since lowlights don't wear out as fast and people don't notice your rootz growing back as fast.
