I'm going into high school in a little bit, and I need to choose something for an athletic credit. I can't be in gym, and so I think I'm going to be in dance, but I don't know if I should choose ballet, jazz, or tap. Could someone give me the pros, cons and some information on the genres? Thanks.

I would recommend Ballet . Ballet will give you technique, flexibility and straight. Ballet will prepare you to any other style of dancing you want to do in the future.

I would choose ballet.

Ballet is definitely very important in developing basic dance skills, as opposed to the other two. Ballet is great for learning the basics, especailly if you want to learn other types of dance in the future. A lot of contemporary dance genres are based off of ballet, so if you take modern or jazz in the future, you can already have the knowledge of the positions, plus the coordination and balance that are so essential.

Some of the teachers can be a bit intimidating, but try not to let it bother you. When people make dancing their entire lives, it becomes more of a disciplined art than a fun foray into a new medium.

most importantly, though, have fun! that's the WHOLE point of dancing.

according to my 10 yr old who has been taking dance for 4 years: ballet will give you a good overall knowledge of the dance skills needed for most styles ... tap is a bit boring, jazz is fun though

I would prefer Jazz, then tap then ballet. I do not like to cram my toes (like in ballet) and jazz seems to be more modern. I think you would learn to express yourself better. And tap is cool. I do like tap very much, but it can be hard to master. It feels a little weird at first, but you soon get over that.

Start with ballet. It will give you balance, conditioning, flexibility, and poise and will give you a great start if you want to go into other dance styles. If you're any good at it, and want to make it a career, you'll know the classical positions, turns and jumps that choreographers ask for. BTW, if you get a chance to take Afro-Brazilian - by all means go for it! (It's the most fun you can have in the studio! - with your tights on, that is.)

Ballet will make you more graceful and coordinated in general.

Jazz will come in handy at parties more than the other two.

Tap is just amazing fun.
