Find a site (colleges) you feel would be of interest to your son. Maybe he is undecided about his major. He doesn't have to worry. Most everyone he meets will say they started out with a definite degree in mind, but changed it and tell him about the money he can apply for; the feeling of accomplishment by simply sitting there in classes every day learning to get out of his shell and participate in discussions. Raising your hand for the first time is very scary; and a good teacher will not act on that, but will remind everyone, there are no stupid questions. And tell him about the lasting relationships that are possible because as we progress through the life of academia, we are becoming more informed and can make far better decisions than when we had no intelligent means to make a decent decision. Maybe he's an artist and everyone says don't be a starving artist and he'd have to go against the talents he was born with just to make a living by doing some type of work he would not be happy with. Also ask him what is it that he can do for hours and still enjoy the time he's spending.

Why don't you let him take a year off. During that year he can figure out what he wants to do. In the meantime he can get a job so that he can help out with expenses as well as having spending money. Maybe he doesn't want to go to college and doesn't know how to tell you or maybe he's not sure about where he wants to go. Give him one year and tell him that at the end of the year he either has to go to college or go to work and move out.

I don't know what's confusing about going to college. He's 18 and can figure it out on his own. Well, let him choose, either go to college or work--he needs to move whatever his decision is. He's an adult. I would give him a list of dorms/room for rent available where he can live and tell him that he can visit them and decide which place he likes best.

He is getting down to the wire. He is an adult now so you can't make him do anything. I agree you should stay on him about attending and do all you can to get him there. Taking a year off is a bad move. Is it possible to drive him to the college in order to get the housing, classes set up?

You can sell your house and only get a small one for you, he will have to get a job or go to school. Or you can let him run your life and worry too much. If he wants a year off that fine if he can afford it. He will have to pay rent ,food, medical, gas, insurance, clothes unless he depending on you for that you have to put your foot down for his and your own good.
