You are hurt. The heart and mind get wounded just like the body except the difference is is that you can't see it or bandage it. You have to give it time.
You can't force your heart to heal but you can prevent it from staying hurt by taking care of yourself, trying not to dwell on this person, forgiving yourself, and just eating and exercising right.
Give it time...it's taken me a year to get over the last guy who hurt me. I look back and can see how awful the healing process was; wishing that I had a bullet wound more than a broken heart. AT least a bullet wound would heal in time....but my broken heart....well, it's just painful.
I feel for you. Just decide you are moving forward. And you may have to decided that every five minutes at first. But in time, it'll get less and less frequent. Just protect your heart next time.

Maybe because either you or the person you are with haven't gotten over it yet or still have feelings for each other. Especailly if the relationship was a marriage at it lasted a number of years.

Good question. I would like to know the answer too. But it might be because deep inside we fear that we're not gonna find someone else who loves us, or that we won't be able to love anyone as we did in the past, so we cling to the person or the relationship that meant so much to us.

In my case, it was a fear of never being loved. And feeling that I'd always be alone. But that was because of the head games my ex played. Now I am very happy and have been for 16 years with a new man.

Most people don't like change and fear the unknown. They would rather stay in an unhappy relationship than risk a new one.

Well that's because its too hard to get your heart to do what your head wants to do.
Give it some time, eventually it will get easier.
