Dreadlocks are dreadful because they're a dirty tangled mess. I think you have to take sections of your hair, apply gel and twist. How long will it take? It depends on how long it takes for your hair to grow out.

Dredlocks begin by different methods. You can get your hair coiled with a comb or palm-rolled, two-strand twisted, or braided. The coiling of the hair is what a lot of people I know use. A locking gel is used when twisted with the comb or by the palms of hand. You don't shampoo your hair for at least 3-4 weeks depending how fast your hair begins to lock. Once your hair begins to lock around itself, you can go to a salon and have it shampooed and retwisted. When it is retwisted, it just takes the new growth and existing hair to be palm rolled to acheive "locks." This is redone as much as twice a month. How long your locks are depends on your natural hair length before the locks and how fast your hair grows. Hope this helps!!!

It never ceases to amaze me how many people that know nothing about a subject will wax on and on as if they have something to contribute and just end up being nasty and rude.
Heres the deal- dreads are not nasty or dirty. They must be kept very clean to get good and tight. If you are caucasian the true way to get good healthy dreads is to wash them well and regularly without the benefit of conditioner- get em squeaky clean and then just dont brush. This takes ALOT of time for them to lock up and form but its the "proper" way. If you wish to separate and rat your hair to speed it along-go for it, I wont tell -but steer clear of any weird waxes or stuff people tell you to put in your dreads- that stuff doesnt come out and is just icky and gross. You may experience alot of ignorant or rude people that have different or strange ideas about dreads (like we have seen here) but just ignore or enlighten them. However- please be sure this is a style you will want for awhile as they are rather permanent. good luck and happy dreading! (going the "true" route could take you a year or two- if you want to rat them and shape them you could have them forming that day and something super cute in a month or two - rock them!)
