Is there a specific title for the type of doctors that deliver babies? Is it included in the medical training that doctors/surgeons go through?

OB/GYN - Obstetricians/Gynecologists train specifically for the delivery of babies. Some family practice docs have trained for deliveries as well.

Actually, babies are not delivered. They come out quite naturally even without a dr. But the word you are looking for is Midwife. Apparently they know everything about babies and can fix any problems and talk to the mother and stuff.

The profession is called Mid-wifery. A regular surgeon would not know how to deliver a baby. He would not know what stuff to say. Those Midwifes know their stuff, they really do.

You can probably learn how they train by finding a manual on the internet but the real midwifes get practice on real people. If you can attend a few births and see the birth that would be good experience for you.

Yes, it is included in a doctor's training. In medical school they must go through a time in obstetrics where they work to deliver babies as well as treat the mothers and babies after birth. The special field you are referring to for doctors who specialize in working with pregnant women and baby delivery is called gynecology. The doctor is called a gynecologist. You can find them listed under physicians in the yellow pages.

Good luck!!

Yes, all MD's are trained in the delivery of a baby. Bear in mind that women are able to give birth all by themselves and have done so for many years. Although the medical advances have greatly decreased both maternal and infant mortality rates, an otherwise natural event has been orchestrated into an overmanaged specialty. In an attempt to eliminate any complications (i.e. malpractice suits) doctors routinely perform caesarean sections when not necessarily indicated. Amniocentesis, genetic screenings, etc. all have wonderful diagnostic capabilities, but these test also carry risks, however low.

all physicians, all registered nurses, and many other medical workers are trained in delivering a baby

I, as a mere father, received training in delivering a baby.

my coworker, helped his wife deliver their second child as she lay on the floor of their kitchen (it just happened too fast)

if all goes well, it is not too hard and you don't have to know all that much to deliver a baby

if it doesn't go just perfect, thats when you want hospital facilities and a trained obstetrician/gynecologist there to help

until the last 100 years or so (and still in many places) many babies and many mothers did not survive delivery
it was a pretty dangerous thing

OB/Gyn physicians are trained to deliver babies. Most doctors go through some OB/Gyn training and so are technically trained to deliver, but an obstetrician has more extensive training and is better able to handle any emergencies that may arise.

delivering babies is part of basic first aid training so anyone from someone with a first aid at work certificate (you cant guarantee when someone is gonna give birth you learn how and hope you dont need to ) to top obstetric/gynaecological professors can deliver a baby, but normally it is handled by a midwife (normal nursing training plus extra specialist training for delivering difficult babies)if it is a natural birth with no complications (most births) Dr's only called in for complications because they re not needed normally if a dr is going to be needed as well as a midwife it's known about long before labour pains start

Physicians must take another 4 years of schooling and become specialized in obstetrics to deliver babies. However there have been instances of nurses and even EMTs delivering babies when a doc was not available.

Most doctors can deliver a baby in a pinch(they do a rotation in obstetrics in med school). An obstetrician specializes in baby delivery and pregnancy. You must finish 8 yrs. of med school with an additional 4 to specialize in OB.

Gynecologist is another name for a doctor who sees women only. They spend a lot of time delivering babies. All doctors have to have training in delivery of babies. It's part of the curriculum.
