Have you ever been on a ski drag lift, the kind where you hold onto a rope that pulls you up the hill?
First time on one you are told "you will know when you get there". Near the top the hill levels out, since you are, by now, accustomed to the slope the leveling out feels like its flat, you let go the rope and slide backwards. Next time up you wait a bit longer, untill you are really at the top of the lift, the flat ground is so obvious that you wonder how the leveling out fooled you last time.
Meditation, enlightenment and transcendence are the same, you will know for sure, not just a "ahh, this is different".
Unlike ski lifts the slope goes on for ever, each stage of knowledge is just that, a know ledge, where you can wait if you like

The whole aim of meditation is,
1. to calm your mind, and
2. to focus the mind on one thing.
I do not what you mean by 'next level'.
The first level is gaining control of the mind. The mind of a normal person is like an uncontrolled monkey jumping from one thought to another. If you sit down and close your eyes you will notice that your mind is jumping from one thought to another. Even though you want to concentrate on your breath you will find other thoughts also coming in between. In learning to meditate you must first learn to calm your mind. You do this by following every thought that comes into you mind. You must be like a Manager of a Hotel who stands at the entrance and observes the customers coming in. Without getting attached to the thoughts try to observe them. You will find that a thought comes in and that it goes nowhere and another thought follows it - try following that too - with same results. This way you will find that your thoughts gradually subside. Do not try to force out your thoughts.
Once you have noticed that you have not getting any more thoughts I think you have reached the next level.
Thereafter you must start concentrating on your breath. Notice the breath coming in and going out. You should not concentrate only on the tip of your nose. Notice the breath coming in and thereafter your lungs getting filled and then gradually exhaling the breath. You will reach a stage where the mind takes over the breathing and you will not physically feel the breathing. It will be more like 'happy breathing'. That is the 'next' level.
There is a free e book 'The Basic Method of Meditation' at,
http://www.bswa.org/modules/icontent/
Get a print out of it. I feel the author has reached a very high level. It is a person who has reached the 'level' that can describe the level.

I would say you have reached the next level when you are no longer dragged around by your thoughts, but you are able to live in the Moment free of the dreaming mind. Meditation helps you gain control over the thought life, and breaks its strangle hold on your life and awareness.

Well, what you are asking sounds a little vague.. and there are multiple ways of meditating. Usually when I meditate it's either for relaxation or journey/magickal work. I usually know I've been "successful", if that word even applies, if I end up relaxed and feel slightly "floaty" and more concerned with thoughts and ideas and/or mentally traveling/working than I am with my surroundings, my body, or the physical.

Dr Stanislaw Grof researched and developed what he calls “holographic breath work” exercises that induced an increase of pineal glandular secretions of DMT without the aid of external compounds. So the short answer is yes but chances are you don’t have the patience nor ability to develop the skills in order to do so. The effects of DMT are probably not what you are really looking for. Sounds like you just want to get stoned and the effects of DMT are not that of a recreational drug.

Hard to say. I sometimes meditate to relieve stress and connect with myself, but I've never heard of 'levels' in meditation.
All I can say is that when you are at a higher 'level', then chances are you'll know it. It'll feel better. You'll feel more in toch with yourself ad surroundings.

I don't even know what this means. How would you know what the next level is? Is it like the next level of pac-man or donkey kong? Is it going from a state of happiness to being really happy? Can you fall down to lower levels? Is there a level lower than zero?
