I prefer not to use the spell checker, and then learn from and take responsibility for my mistakes. The art of English is not dead, but it soon will be if people rely on spell checkers all the time. Pardon my ignorance, but does a spell checker differentiate between there, their and they're now?

Not much to do but sit around on a Wednesday evening and complain about other people's spelling?
English is not an art, it is a language. Yes, many people misspell words, and the grammar may be mind-boggling, but, then, they're not here to learn english, nor grammar, but, to enjoy asking questions and getting help with their problems.
Relax, enjoy, get a life..
bye

If I use the spell checker, it says I shouldn't use words like centre, neighbour, realise, etcetera.
It will try to convert them to some American dialect.
If you're well educated in the English language, you don't need the spelling checker.
Sorry if I wrote some errors, I'm Dutch (and blond!)

You're not really a great advertisment for well-formed English yourself, oul stock!
Why, oh! why are so few of you using spell-checkers?
Try the book "Eats Shoots & Leaves" by Lynne Truss

When I was at school English Language and English Literature were core subjects to which great detail and emphasis were placed. Mind you, this was in the 60's when discipline was firmly in place. At the risk of sounding an old" fuddy-duddy," in my opinion we have regressed educationally to the stage were semi literacy is an everyday occurrence. Check Speller has not been used in this compilation!

Yes, schools teach English. Very few Americans still use it. Most no longer write letters or essays. It is a skill that must be practiced.

As far as i'm concerned, the internet is a disposable media - what i type today won't matter in a months time, so does correct spelling really matter?
Of course it matters if im typing something important out, but its not like anyone's life depends on any Yahoo Answers...... answer.

It gets to me too, but what I realised when I lived in America is they spell different to us in the UK, so chill out because there are a lot of our US friends on here.
As for schools! There is less time spent on spelling which they say they will be addressing, and of course everyone now texts..

It may be a decline in educational standards, but it's more than that. My wife, who teaches (not English!) at a secondary school, frequently gets homework written in mobile phone text (txt?) speak!
