For example, one TV has an aspect ratio of 4:3, and another has an aspect ratio of 16:9. What is this ratio and what is better of the two?

16:9 is better it gives you more of a movie theater feel when watching dvd's 4:3 is no longer accepted for watch programs & movies& if you watch a full screen version of a movie on a 4:3 shot in 1:85.1 you lose 20 to 25 pct. of the picture, as for 2:35.1 on a 4:3 you lose up to 50pct. of the picture in full screen that's why widescreen tv's are so popular you get more picture & you see things the way it was meant to be seen. a common thing i hear about when people buying a widescreen set is do they fill the whole picture yes&no a 1:85.1 on a wide set can fill the whole screen but 2:35.1 does not because it's shot in a wider frame so you still get silght letterboxing but for those who do not like those bars their is a aspect control on these sets so yes 16:9 is much better.

Whatever the aspect ratio is you get the same amount of picture , letterbox effect just stretches the recieved pic to fit the screen , like wise 4:3 ratio is the same pic only made to fit. check the 2 sizes in a shop side by side and you will see that you still have the whole picture on either ratio

All high definition, many DVD movies, and a few TV programs are being made in "widescreen" which is an aspect ratio of 16:9. You can display most of these on a 16:9 TV without black bars at the top and bottom, thereby getting a larger picture. Most TVs have a "zoom" mode that allows you to fill your widescreen TV with a non-HD picture broadcast as "letterbox" (i.e. with black bars at top and bottom) so you do not see those bars. HDTV will automatically fill the screen.

True high definition will be displayed in the 16:9 aspect ratio. So if you don't want to watch HD in letterbox, which is the way things are supposed to go in 2009, you might consider going wide screen (unless this is just something to hold you over till the prices come down).

The aspect ratio is the ratio of width to height.

Which is better? A matter of personal preference, although the pimps who hawk 16:9 will say that is best.

You've actually got 30% more picture with an 16:9 ratio.

I agree with dmb06851. 4:3 just seems more natural, though it may just be because I've always seen TV that way.
