I saw this word in a book written by Dean Koontz and cannot remember how to spell it. I think it's SHIMONES, SHMONSZ, SHMONSEZ... something along those lines. It's a slang and I think it translates roughly to "foolishness" or "malarkey"

can someone help me spell this word? maybe JEWISH/HEBREW in origin

The word that you're looking for is "shmontses." (It's Yiddish.)

BTW, not to put anyone down, but the other answers don't make sense. "Shmooze" doesn't fit the definition that you're looking for, although, as Yiddish words go, it's a way more-commonly-used word than "shmontses."
