My brother in law is having a prostatectomy tomorrow. My sister wants to take their young children to visit him tomorrow evening. I think it's a horrible idea. 1) he needs rest to recover 2)hospitals are germy and kinda traumatic-I don't think it's smart/safe for the kids 3)the kids will cause a disruption-they are soooo noisy (brilliantly, intelligently noisy but still). I keep telling her I think it's a bad idea but she's not listening. Any ideas of things I could say to convince her?

The reason I said medical professionals was to avoid this type of answer. I'm not looking for emotional responses but technical ones. The surgery is robotic with an overnight stay. He will be home the next day. So emotional support (for him or the children) is not a factor.

If he was having a disfiguring surgery (e.g. radical neck dissection) or was going to be intubated or have a chest tube or something potentially traumitic for young children to see, I would agree that the kids should stay home. But it will be more than okay for the kids to go visit their dad after a prostatectomy. He will most likely be on a medical/surgical unit (barring any surgical complications), and the nurses will be used to many and frequent visitors of all ages. If the kids end up causing too much of a disruption, I'm sure the nursing staff will let them know. But more than likely everything will be okay. Just have your sister give them a heads-up that they need to be quieter than usual when they visit daddy at the hospital. It'll be good for your brother in law to have family support while he's at the hospital.

You're entitled to your opinion, however, it's your sister and brother-in-law's decision to take the kids in to see him. Is he ok with the kids coming to visit? I think it's a good thing that the kids can see that dad is ok and it will more than likely help him feel better too. After visiting with dad awhile, they can go to the maternity ward and look at all the new babies too.

Give them the favorite food(Ice cream or whatever they like) and start the favorite cartoon. They will forget rest of the world.
