That's my point too ... I'm against amnesty of any kind, but IF there's going to be one, then the people who have applied for their green cards legally, gone through the medical and biometrics etc. are the ones who should be given this amnesty ... at least we know who they are (background check), that they're not carrying contagious diseases (medical check), that they have funds to support themselves (financial eligibility) ... why should they have to wait sometimes for years while 20 million people of whom we know precisely nothing should get preferential treatment? Where is the logic????

Yes I would be, however It isn't a line. What are you "in line" for??? What do you get when you "get to the front"???

The problem is that we haven't decided what we want and what we want to enforce:

What (many) Immigrants offer:
inexpensive labor
lower priced goods and services
start new businesses and take risks

What (some of them anyways) they take:
increased price of health care and insurance
increased cost to schools
wire money out of the country
some increases in crime
a more bi-lengual society (for better or for worse)
increase in size of the "lower class"

So the question is, "would america be better or worse off if ALL illegal immigrants went home tomorrow?"

I personally think we'd be worse off. Fast food, hotels, travel & Tourism, building and development and agriculture would all suffer. Prices would go up. As a result buying power would go down and the economy as a whole would suffer.

Did you know that unemployment can be too low???

Why are so many people complaining about mexicans that want to come here and pick strawberries at $4.00 per hour so that we can enjoy inexpensive strawberries? What would you have to be paid per hour to pick strawberries for 10 hours a day? Seriously...give me a number.

We need to figure out what we want as a contry and then put forces in place to make sure that it happens. Right now we've got a table full of food with a sign that says "Free food" and then we're getting mad at people when they eat it.

We put on a scarry face at the border, but then don't enforce it 5 miles away.

We are hipocrits as a country. That is the problem that needs to be solved, and that's not going to be fixed with a taller and longer fence.

Excellent point. Of course the devil's advocate position would be if the US is handing out citizenship anyway, does it have the right to choose who gets in based on who provides the greatest benefit for our country? As Mexico is our neighbor, and our 2nd largest trading partner, the US benefits more by helping Mexico and its citizens than helping those from Asia or elsewhere in the world. Assuming we're giving out citizenship or work visas anyway, wouldn't things be better for the US if it improved relations with Mexico and/or helped it to become more like Canada?

You are asking a lot of really good questions.

I agree with you...the answer is NO...

We are trying to bring a friend over from Belize but because of the nightmare created by illegals, it will take much longer. My husband is an attorney, so at least we don't have those expenses to bear...but it is totally unfair to her and her son, by an American...to go to the back of the line.

Yep, I'd be very upset. It's not right. Deport ALL illegal immigrants.

Dwight (above): Yes, and "their" ought to be a grammar test, too! lol

When you make your statement fluently and with correct spelling and grammar, it is much more effective. Having said that, I completely agree.
