How many military tours to Irak are allowed?

I am unable to track down my ex-husband's location. Last update is that he was in Irak (for over a year now) and will continue in Irak for another six months to one year. Does this sound about right or is his wife making it up?

It is just too stressful on the soldiers and I think the military has to pay them loads of extra per diem (prob. depends on branch too) for everyday over a year they are there.
