It depends a lot on the kid. Some children are able to sleep through around 4 months old. Most kids start evening out in their sleeping around then and at least sleeping for longer stretches. It's not until about 8 months old that almost all kids don't need a late night feeding. If you start a regular nap and bedtime routine around 4 months, that will help your kid get used to sleeping at a regular time.

Everyone will try to tell you that a baby should be sleeping through the night around 3-4 months old, but at that age they should still be feeding on demand, and by the time they are eating some solid foods, they usually begin to teeth. For me, teething was the worst! My son woke up constantly. I dont think he really slept through the night until he was about 2 or 2 1/2 years old. That sounds like a long time, but it really isn't. Just hang in there! Being a parent is the most difficult and most rewarding thing you will ever do. :)

This depends greatly on your style of parenting, the temperament of your newborn and mainly, whether your wife will be breastfeeding the baby. Some babies are mellow, sleep like rocks and easygoing. Some are high needs, easily stressed, light sleepers. Most are somewhere in between.
Breastfed babies do wake up much more at night and take longer to sleep through the night. My first I ended up bottlefeeding because she was early and wasn't gaining enough. She was sleeping solidly 8 hrs at night by 3 months (and this is common for bottlefed babies). My breastfed babies were about 8 months before they could make it that long.
However, breastfeeding is an investment you make in your child's future, kind of like a college education. Sure it's a chore and a lot of work when you're doing it. But it provides long term benefits for both mom and baby.

It depends on the child.
I lucked out with my first born. She was over 10 lbs. at birth, and she slept through the night from the day we brought her home from the hospital.
Now, 22 years later, I am the proud father of a newborn baby girl. She was a little less than 7 lbs at birth, and our pediatrician said regardless of how much the child might want to sleep, wake her up to feed her every 3 hours. We're hoping she will sleep through the night (say, from midnight to 6 AM) within the next couple of months. If not, we'll wake up and take care of whatever she needs.
As far as comforting the child, you shouldn't have a problem.
Cradle the child in your arms properly, talk in a soothing, calm, loving voice, and make sure you burp them plenty when you are feeding them so they don't get bad gas!! Make plenty of eye contact and touch them gently (mine loves to grasp my finger with her tiny hand). In no time, the bond between the two of you will be immeasurable.

expectancies? My 8 weeks or so. definitely everyone else (and probably Y! solutions helped with the belief) appeared to have their little ones napping by way of very straight away. basically?? My son merely began napping for the period of the nighttime approximately 75% of the time final month. I nonetheless awaken with him approximately 2 nights a week. Holy Cow! the 1st time he did that became the main excellent day in historic past!

My son slept from the age of 4 weeks for 8 hours a night, 12 hours a night from the age of 3 months.
All babies are different - u might be as lucky as we were! Just feed them more before bed timeso they have the reserves to see them through the night and if they do wake then don't entertain them, just see to their needs and settle them ASAP that way they will realise gettin up in the night is boring!
According to my hubby my son slept right through from as soon as he got home from hospital. Thats cos he slept through him waking up LOL!
Good luck with the new baby.

my daughter slept through the night at 7 months
at 6 months i put some rice cereal in her bottles 3 Tabelspoons to keep her full through the night. WOWWWW did that trick work great for me. You will need to increase the size of the hole in the bottle to let the rice milk combination flow > you can use a hot needle

mine started sleeping through the night when they were about seven years old. sleep now, it is your last chance for a few years. breastfeeding is the best way to handle newborns in the night. just stick it in the baby's mouth and everyone can go back to sleep.

Not until around 4 months old, usually. Before then, they need to be fed every 2 hours or so round the clock, so they are awake a lot more.
