I know that the Shakers believe this and I think it is an interesting idea, but I can't seem to find anything that could lead to this conclusion. Is the belief based on other outside sources?

1 Corinthians 7:2
Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband.

IS the act of marriage alone enough to prevent fornication? No, that would be silly.

Here is the answer:

Hebrews 13:4

Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge.

I think that some stress that sex outside marriage is wrong so much that some people forget the marriage part. Somewhere people just receive a distorted message and it sticks.

Many years back I was stopped for speeding. My young son was in the car with me, I was drinking coffee. My son began to cry and get upset-when I ask why, he said that I was not supposed to "drink" and drive.
Maybe this kind of misunderstanding can occur with teachings on sex also.

There is nothing in the Bible that teaches that sex is bad. First of all God created it. He does however give specific guidelines as to its context.

In response to justinprime's response, God did not create sex just for procreation- in fact there is a passage in Song of Solomon that remind the huband that may his wive's breasts satisfy him. In the context of marriage- sex is a healthy and great thing! And there is another passage - can't think of the reference right now that instruct wives against withholding from their husbands (meaning they shouldn't use sex as a weapon to manipulate) but understand it's part of a healthy marriage.

In terms of the Shakers don't know much about them, but just that the belief you that sex is always wrong is not biblical.

Hope that helps...

The Bible clearly mentions sex as a priviledge, given by God to the spouses (married couple of man and woman), it is not bad at all, actually, God gave it as a gift, the gift to enjoy each other... Sex is not even for procreation only according to the bible. The problem is that people has corrupted sex by all means, from pre-marital relationships to several others... sex as a part of the marriage is a blessing, the blessing of being one!

I must respond directly to your first answerer, "justinprime" who says the bible says sex is not to be used for pleasure. That is -- and I emphatically insist -- WRONG.

1. Have you ever read Song of Solomon? (That's in the bible between Ecclesiastes and Isaiah.)

2. It's illogical to believe that God would create sex as pleasurable and say "don't get pleasure out of it" and only allow fertility 3-5 days per month. Give me a break.

Nowhere in the Bible does it say that "sex is always wrong." The first commandment in Scripture is "be fruitful and multiply." Certain types of sexual behavior are considered wrong (incest, adultery, lying with a man as one lies with a woman, bestiality). But that does not equate to "sex is always wrong." Why anyone would be led to believe such a thing is baffling. People who say it's based on the Bible are wrong.

Sex is not always wrong. Sex was created by God for pro creation and for marriage. It was not intended to be bad. It was meant for married couples to create children and enjoy each other. Sex is used for pleasure with many people during this day and age and as you can see, people are getting all kinds of diseases. This is God's punishment for not waiting until you are married to have sex. It is stated in the new testament. After Jesus came to earth he told us how to live properly. We are not to have many wives or husbands or to have mistresses.

the bible does not say sex is always wrong. it says sex is wrong outside of marriage and with the same sex and with animals. GOD created sex and honors sex within marriage. GOD knows that sex is good when practiced in the way HE created it to be practiced. sex used any other way IS wrong and has terrible consequinces.

The Bible does not mentioned sex and wrong, but the abuse of sex - not intended for procreation -. David had many wifes and many mistresses. And yet he was God's favorite.

Bull...God created sex for procreation and for "fun" between a man and his wife. Look at Song of Solomon....such a sweet love story. God put it in there for a reason. It wouldn't be so much fun if it were ONLY for procreation. Think about it.
