when making baked beans - will baking soda added help remove the gas??

Yes, because the chemical in the beans that causes gas is an acid and the soda neutralises it. However, the soda will also destroy vitamins and flavour. The best thing is to wash the chemical away.

If you're starting with dried beans and soaking them overnight, throw way the water and use fresh water to cook with.

If you're using canned beans, pour away the water in the can and wash them.

just thanks for asking this : I have had a good laugh just picturing the scene if you do add baking soda also your answers are so funny. Baking soda is taken in a little water by little old ladies who have sucked on too many sweets , fatty cakes and chips. They almost universally dislike health food, so don't dare add it or you may explode and think of the risk to the atmosphere - you may well bring on global warming all by yourself.

my grand ma use to add a can of coke to beans in the presoak stage, i still dont know if it worked but it does make sense since coke has carbolic acid basically the same thing as stomac acid to help break down the bean and get rid of gas what is youre thoughts on this matter?
