If you don't want to go with video games and you want to give him something different then perhaps one of these ideas may help..
I am not the kind of person to buy big brand name anything for the kids to wear but for his 12th birthday he really wanted some brand name clothes and so I tok himwith me so he could choose them and so he could also see the difference in price... we first went to Big W and to Target to see what the ordinary prices of things are and then went to boutique for skate and surfwear where he selected an outfit... he was admittedly very shocked at the price difference.. and did offer to get more clothes at the department store rather than one outfit at the boutique... but as it was his birthday present I encouraged him to buy what he had set out to buy but to remember the difference.
get him a book of ten movie tickets from one of the cinema chains that way throughout the year he can take himself to the movies ten times... and ten times he gets to think what a great present he got.. My son loved his move tickets. (13th)
If there is a sport he is interested in buy him al the gear he needs to play that sport and a few coaching sessions too. my son loved the golf clubs I bought him... (14th)
Last year my son wanted a particular pair of shoes but I couldnt tell head nor tail of what it was he wanted so I bought him some aftershave and placed $120 inside the box so he could go buy his own shoes.(15th)
Ifyou can afford it and he doesnt have one a laptop computer is invaluable for high school students...
Most teens want a mobile phone, if he doesnt have one get him a prepaid mobile and some extra credit for it.
A day out with just you and him where he can get to choose what it is he and you do.... I have done this with my son and we went to a movie of his choice with all the trimmings, had a meal at a restauarant and during the day he told me he needed some clothes so we went and bought him an outfit of his choosing.
I hope these help.

You can't go wrong with video games. The hand-held ones are pretty hot right now.
