We were taking care of a friend's cat while they were on vacation. A week later the cat got sick and we took it to the emergency Veterinary. They quoted almost 4 thousand bucks to save his life. My wife and I decided to take him back to our house. Next day I buried him under the tree.

Oh, I forgot to mentioned, the cat was diagonosed with blockage to the bladder, liver failure and when into cardiac arrest.
I also called my friend the situation and he said to go ahead bring the cat home.

I would have done the same thing that you and your friend did with this cat...the same thing happened to us a few years ago when we were checking on our friend's cat for a week and our friend told us he knew the time was close and if he had known it was that close he would have cancelled his vacation

no, but not because I'm callous. Quite the opposite.
When I think of a cat that old suffering, I don't think any amount of money will prolong any meaningful life. I don't think it is kind to continually flog an animal (or a person for that matter) when it doesn't mean that they'll live. A cat that old doesn't have a very long life left anyhow. Most don't see 14.

You did the right thing, since you had permission from the cat's owner. There is no sense in putting an older animal through that much pain and suffering, and spending all that money to get maybe a few more months of life.

If the treatment had a reasonable chance of success and would provide the animal with a good quality of life afterwards, yes.
If it would only end up gaining the animal three or four months of life that would be painful and full of medications, no.
It's not the cost that's the deciding factor - it's what's best for the animal.

No. As much as I like cats, one needs to keep things in the right proportion. And $ 4000 would feed a lot of starving people in India.

Why didn't you call your friend? This was not your decision to make.
I just paid $2,000 to put my cat in the cat hospital for about 4 days. It's alot of money but I am responsible for my pets.

First I would get a second opinion. And then a third. If the answer is still rediculous... then no. I wouldn't even spend that on a younger cat. I love my pets, but $4,000 is waaay too much. I'd avoid spending that on myself for doctors!

I love my cats but I wouldn't be able to afford $4000 to treat them. But as the owner, it would be my decision. Did you even call your friends and give them a chance to decide or did you take him home and just let him die?

I think you did the right thing. 14 is pretty old for a cat and if he had all of those health problems, even with the treatment he may have made it. RIP kitty.
