What does it mean to be dead?
As a Catholic, I was taught and have come to believe that death of the body is not really "death", as "death" is permanent. We are taught, and I have come to believe, that there is life in the spirit after death of the body, and that the body will be raised again. Therefore, are the saints and Mary dead?

I believe that the physical universe, as we know it, is confined to a temporal bubble, and that time only exists inside that bubble.
When we die, we pass out of the physical universe into Eternity.
Eternity is not an infinite period of time, but a condition of existence that is totally outside of time. In eternity, there is no temporal separation between events.
Heaven is a substate of Eternity in which you exist under the favor of God. This is what happens to all true christians and saints when they pass on.
What we know as Hell is another substate of Eternity, in which you exist under the judgement of God. You exist under the guilty weight of all your sins without the benefit of temporal separation of events, and without the benefit of believing your excuses. Everything in eternity is laid bare. No deception is possible, which includes lying to yourself. You'll know your damned, and you'll know its your fault.

No they are not dead. The physical death of the body is only one aspect of death. Spiritually there is death also, as of not being spriritually reborn, baptism. During the resurrection the soul which consists of the spirit and the body will be reunited and perfected in Christ. Whether all souls are resurrected at once does not matter, as we all die at different times.

You are a Spirit, just like the invisible Angel's around you right now. You live in a Body that look's just like you (a Spiritman). DEATH is the Spiritual Force that can Seperate you from your Body (which die's cause YOU came out of it), for Good.
p.s. You (a Spirit) has to be Recreated (Born-Again) befor you can go to Heaven. Your Body dosen't get Recreated, just YOU, a Spirit, when you ask JESUS to SAVE(Recreate) you. Hope this helps.

Physical death is the death of the body we have here on earth. The soul/ spirit of man goes in conscience existance to eternity, either to heaven to be with Jesus Christ and all true believers or to hell to be there forever. If the saints were spiritually born again, they are still alive in heaven with Jesus Christ. I'm sure Mary is still alive in heaven with Jesus Christ.

The physical body is dead, the spirit is eternal. The exception is Mary, as she was taken body & soul to heaven.

The cessation of physical life. Spiritual life may or may not go on after the body dies.

Lack of life
Linda R: to your "knowledge" ought to be "belief" as there is NO proof of life after death in any form (unless you believe in Shirley McLain)
