Cut the cake first, serve it on the plates and invite him to give a candle to the correct number of people (if he's 12, then 12 candles, 12 people have candles) or you can give one candle to each person. The people with candles each put their own candle into their own piece of cake, light it, and on the count of 3 everyone blows out their own candle. That way he can spit on his own cake and not on everyone elses. There are still candles, and he can even go around and light everyone's candle, unless he would spit on the piece. It might be fun for him to see everyone make a wish for him. One wish from him when he blows out the candles vs (however many people have a candle) all wishing different wishes for him. If I were a kid, I would prefer many wishes from friends and family vs my one wish.

Put the candles on a layer of protective film of some sort, and then put the layer on top of the cake before he blows them!

Nothing! Just don't eat the cake. Or I'll have to spit.

It may not be his fault. He may just have a bad saliva problem. And, don't eat the cake!!!
