I dont think anybody really uses that last setting because who wants to eat coal like bread? I think someone should invent a toaster that can only make your toast roasted brown or golden and edible! He would make a lot of money!

Yes I agree with you....but there are those, those that are rarely mentioned in the toasting world...the Over-Toasters. They get a sick sadistic pleasure out of scorching perfectly innocent toast. The blacker and more charcoal like the better. If it doesn't fall to ash when they pull it out of the toaster, they are not satisfied. So it is they who control the making of toasters.....sort of a Illuminati for browned bakery products. Beware of spreading this information, they have toasted before and shall toast again.

*note they are also the ones that buy marmlade and veggiemite.

hahah!! you're right, never thought about this... my toaster goes up to 12 but I use the "7" setting and it gets really brown! It burns on 8. So what would 12 do? you're right... incineration! probably cause a fire and burn up the toaster, the house, the neighborhood.

even if you were going to toast like a frozen bagel or a frozen hash brown you wouldn't jack up the heat.. they tell you to toast it on medium heat, like twice.

Therefore the only conclusion is that it's to sell the toaster because people want to buy toasters that give them more settings. "Yeah, this one goes up to 25 so it must be better!" kind of attitude. Hope they buy a fire extinguisher too! ;_)

There are different kinds of bread out there. Whole wheat or whole grain breads take longer to toast than Wonder Bread. English muffins take even longer. That's why.

Could be for bagels or frozen objects that will need extra time. Since breads come in different thicknesses and types, that's why there are different settings. Your idea is good, but unworkable.
