room temperature keeps them crisp and they stay fresher longer. putting them in the fridge starts the breakdown of the edible flesh and also the extra water promotes molding in any fruit or vegetable.

my husband is a chef and we keep ours at room temp until an hour or two before we eat them and than we refrigerate them just because I like them to be cold when i eat them.
