My miniature poodle gets bloody diarrhea several times a year. She's about 5 1/2 years old. I have already taken her to the vet for this, but the only thing they can think of is that she's stressed (over what?!). So they recommended I give her Kaopectate. There doesn't seem to be any change in her behavior either. Does anyone else have any advice or a second opinion? I would love to stop this from happening to her!

It is an irritated bowel syndrome, much like ulcers, or crohn's disease in humans...Yes, attacks are brought on by stress, but her system needs to be strengthened to handle stress better..

I would recommend contacting Marina Zacharias at www.naturalrearing.com ..scroll down to 'contact us'..I am positive she will be very helpful with this..she is nice to talk to..her dad may answer..a retired vet..and both are very nice and easy to talk with..
Marin is an Holistic Practitioner, and loves to help dogs. she gave me her permission to post her contact here..

That can't be normal! If she doesn't appear ill otherwise, then it's not a virus. And rat poison would make her very sick and kill her in a few days.

I think you'd need to have a colonoscopy to look for bowel cancer or a bleeding tumor.

It might be diet related - try a food without wheat, by products or preservatives. Wheat causes a reaction in many people - called Celiac disease. Any changes in diet should be made slowly to avoid diarrhea - gradually mix more new food in with what you've been using until he's switched over. Try the new Nutro Ultra holistic food

or Science Diet.

Check out the website at the Cornell Vet school & good luck. I hope it's nothing serious.

That's almost always a sign of a serious problem. If this is happening on a regular basis, something weird is going on. See another vet, and try to keep a log of everything that goes on with your dog on a daily basis, so the vet can look for some sort of pattern of events that could be the cause of it.

See another vet. Have they done a fecal to rule out coccidia or giardia???? They can put her on Albon, it will often clear up bloody enteritis. You really need another vet. To just say the dog is stressed is wrong if they have not done anything to make sure there are no other conditions!!!!!!

Get a second opinion for ANOTHER VET.
Anytime Bloody Diarrhea is involved, there IS something wrong.
I find it hard to believe it's stress related.
