You go to the pet supply store and get TRADEWINDS tablet tapewormer. You look on the bottle and it will tell you how many to give for the weight of your cat. There are three tablets in the bottle.
You ALSO get a flea product like Advantage. Tapeworms often come from fleas, and there is no point to treating the tapeworm if you do not treat the fleas!!!

You can also go to the vet and get it taken care of. Tradewinds is the SAME ingredient that is in Droncit that you get from the vet.
If you see the vet, they can check for fleas and update any overdue vaccines!!

There is a pill you can get from the vet. It is cheap and is only a 1 time treatment. Call your vet, explain the worm to them, if it is actually tapeworm, they will have you come in and pick up the meds and usually an office visit isn't even needed. I treated my cat and it was only $9. (if your cat hasn't been in to a vet in a really long time, they will probably want to see him/her anyway)

If you have a Tractor Supply near you, you can buy the pill there as well. But it costs more than at the vets office.
Also, make sure to treat your cat for fleas. They get tapeworms by ingesting an infected flea so treating for the worms won't matter if you don't get rid of the fleas as well.
