People who want to dislike him equate saying something bad with believing it or being a bad person, as if they've never said something stupid before.

I think justwebbrowsing made some excellent points.
For me, the quick "I'm sorry's" that Mel Gibson has given seem hollow to me. I think he's apologizing now because he's been publicly humiliated as well as for damage control. He wants to protect what's left of his "brand." How sincere were these apologies? Well, I keep reading he's a religious man. But I can't reconcile that with the terrible things he's said along with my suspicion that he directed "Passion of the Christ" to harm Jewish people in some way.
See what the Anti-Defamation League has to say about "Passion of the Christ":
http://www.adl.org/presrele/mise_00/4275_00.asp
He has to make changes within himself before his apologies will be worthy. Now that he's in recovery that process can begin.
I'm not saying Gibson shouldn't be forgiven. It's possible for a person to forgive, while not forgetting a wrong. Not all people believe in forgiveness though, which of course is their right.
My hope is that Gibson, and through him, his children, learns to respect and honor the Jewish people. (As Gibson's father is a Holocaust denyer, we can see where Gibson's hatred of Jewish people began.)
So, I'm withholding my forgiveness until I see that he's walking the walk, not just talking the talk. Until then, I will refrain from seeing his movies.

It is not because he was caught drinking in driving. It's because he told everyone he is NOT Anti-Semetic... yet said plenty of things against the Jews that would lead one to believe that he most certainly is Anti-Semetic. He lost a contract to do a series on the Holocaust because of this. And I am sure he will lose much more.
There's nothing to forgive on my end. I dislike the man for being a liar and will most likely never trust another thing that comes out of his mouth. I never paid to go see any of his movies at the theatre to begin with, why would I start now?

Mel Gibson is not the example we are to follow as Christians, Jesus is. The press hate Gibson for making a good Christian movie and making money off it. I forgive him, and I would want to be forgiven if my life was under a microscope.

I grew up in the Jewish tradition and I can forgive him without question alcaholism is a disease that'll make you say/do dumb idiotic things. He'll be punished enough when the DUI goes on his record. Yes I forgive him...I enjoy his talent/movies and hope to continue doing so. PEACE!
I am now a practicing Unitarian Universalist...we wouldn't hesitate to forgive as many of our members are recovering alcaholics. Check us out at WWW.UUA.ORG...sorry for the plug...I just have a feeling about your belief system that makes me think you'd be a good UU. PEACE!

Mel Gibson had been accused of being a rampant anti-semite which he had denied. He denied it being a motivating force behind his snuff film, 'Passion of the Christ'.
His anti-semitic tirade when he was arrested revealed the true nature of his character, his family's character, and the truth behind his actions.
There is no apology for that. You can't say, I'm sorry for being a holocaust denying Jew hater who has actively been trying to harm Jews in society.
It is rare when someone reveals such a vile truth about themselves in public and now that Mel Gibson has done that, you can't unring that bell.
He is forever shamed, and rightly so.

Since they are, they should criticize Jesus for doing something rather similar. In Matthew 11:19 Jesus was called a drunkard for drinking wine in the homes of local crooks and thieves.
If they don't then they are hypocrites.
