This, like the majority of questions on here, is a very cryptic query. At first glance I might say your girlfriend must be old enough and discriminating enough to choose her own food. But, there's always the possibility -- and I'm just guessing, mind you -- that you are either taking her out for dinner or fixing a meal for her yourself. Am I right?

If you're taking her out, let her choose what she wants from the menu. Hopefully, she will have consideration for your billfold.

If cooking at home, you probably know her tastes and any dietary considerations she may have. If you really haven't a clue, then pick up the phone and ask her what she'd like for you to fix.

Okay, okay -- you want specifics -- notwithstanding the fact that we poor answerers have no idea of what this young lady likes. Let's assume that she is not a vegetarian. Therefore, you have six hours in which you can go to the store, buy a filet mignon, take it home, marinate it for tenderness. While the steak is marinating, bake a potato -- that's right -- bake it early, and for at least an hour. Then take it out of the oven, let it cool, then scoop out the inside, mash it up with milk and butter. Add a little bit of grated cheddar cheese, some garlic powder and oregano. Stuff it back in the potato shell, wrap it in foil, and refrigerate. Set it next to the marinating steak. Now take some salad greens, rinse them well in cold water, shake off the excess water and tear the leaves apart into bite-size pieces. Place back in the fridge so the greens can crisp. I forgot to mention, when you go to the store to get the steak, also buy some red wine, some chocolate pudding mix and some pastry shells. Next put the wine in the fridge to chill. Prepare the pudding from the package directions and pour it into the pastry shells. Set these in the fridge to chill. Your fridge is now in overload mode, chilling all these goodies. You've spent about two hours, give or take on these preliminary preparations. You still have four hours to kill by playing video games, taking a shower, straightening up your living quarters, or at least clearing some walk-through space. Chase the dog and cat outside so they don't make any further messes, put your feet up and relax until it's time for the next steps. You may doze off, so set an alarm clock.

One hour now remains before your girlfriend comes. Okay, set the table with linen cloth and napkins and your best china. She won't care if you bought your dishes from Lennox or Wal-mart. Ditto for your silverware. Put the stuffed potatoes back in a slow oven to heat. They're already baked, so you don't want to overdo it. Toss the salad with caesar dressing and croutons. Pour the wine, light the candles, put the steaks on the grill, and you're all set. The dessert should remain in the fridge until dessert time.
If you have some french bread, smear it with butter and garlic powder and heat it up at the last minute.

The doorbell rings. Enter the girlfriend. What's this? Oh, no! Is that a pizza box she's carrying? "Guess what, honey -- I've brought dinner", she chortles. Oh well, them's the breaks. The steak, 'taters, french bread, caesar salad, wine and chocolate tarts will keep for tomorrow night, and you can enjoy them yourself. Bon appetit!
