It's not really about him. Think about it. His views are well known, and they're nothing new.
No, the real thing is this is a smokescreen to draw attention away from the Israeli/Lebanese conflict. You might notice that the American news networks have dramatically reduced their coverage of [the international conflict] today.

He may be a great actor and/or director--that's an opinion that anyone can have--but it doesn't make him a great or bad person.
Whether accurate or not, some Jewish groups thought the Passion was anti-Semitic and said so. Perhaps the groups' views were shaded because Gibson's father is a Holocaust denier, or perhaps Gibson's view is shaded for the same reason. How would any of us know without knowing him?
The facts are that Gibson was clearly aware of what he said but was also drinking heavily and had just realized that he had put himself in a very bad situation. Does it make him anti-Semitic? Not necessarily, but it shows who he tried to blame momentarily for a problem that he quickly then accepted was his own fault.
As for "Jewish Leaders" on their "soap boxes" (classy of you to imply that Jews are in the business of crucifixions), I have no doubt that leaders of other ethnic or religious groups would have spoken up just as quickly and loudly had he used the term "fu**ing" in front of their ethnic groups or religions. It's an offensive way for someone to speak about a group of people (unless one happens to share those views).
Simply put, Gibson said something extremely derogatory, which he later admitted. He wasn't out-of-his-mind drunk, but he was drunk. He apologized, and many groups (including Jewish groups) accepted the apology.
In the end, I hope that he starts a dialogue with the Jewish community and that both sides get something out of it. I think his apology was a responsible start. I also hope that he can find a way to stop using alcohol. That's probably the most important thing he can do.

i think its a testimony to how important our witness is. Especially considering he had recently made the Passion of the Christ and was so adamant about his faith.
His actions have caused many to say believers are hypocrites, etc.
It is true that everyone messes up and i hope Mel gets some help and deals with his drinking problem and over time can re-affirm himself in a positive way in the public eye- but basically not everyone is as forgiving and Mel has no one to blame but himself...
No one knows if he truly meant what was said- but he did say some awfully hateful things and inspite being intoxicated (there will always be doubt as to whether some deep rooted beliefs came out in the moment or whether it was the alcohol speaking). Only Mel knows that and i hope that it is the latter and not the former,...

I am not a drinker myself (interacts with medication I have to take). I think sometimes the average person forgets that those in the spotlight aren't infallible. They are just like us. Is anyone really surprised that someone who was drinking could have said/did something less than appropriate? It just gets a little ridiculous that the same slurs and racial hatred and generalizations are made. When patterns are made it's harder to dismiss, but I don't judge either way.

Saying hateful things about an entire population of people when you're in a position of being a public figure is a horrible thing. If he hadn't been accused of being anti-semitic after "The Passion", maybe it could have been dismissed. But he's kind of developing a pattern hear.

Because he has said things before that hinted at anti-semitism. Now he has confirmed it. And I don't care how drunk I am, I honestly don't believe that jews are the cause of evil in the world so i will not be spouting that.
I would put the blame squarely where it belongs... albinos. There, I said it.

Some people find it hard to believe that a drunk person might say some things he doesn't actually believe.

I love Mel Gibson. People want to jump on Him because He was obedient to God & produced the Passion of Christ.
So, any one anti-christ will attack Him, especially if He messes up.
In His heart, He loves & prays for Israel because His God loves Israel.
