Make sure that any place you go to isn't just going to give/sell you a dog. They should ask a lot about your personal circumstances and abilities as a dog owner. If they don't, they are shysters and neither care about the dog or the potential dog owner, so always expect to have to give a good account of yourself.
You should look locally ... so unless you say what area you are in, it is no use asking here! This is good for you and for the dog. If you find a local place, you can go back there for advice and help if there are any problems. Golden Retrievers (like many dogs) can develop problems which are just not evident at two months, so it's good to get a dog from a reputable local source.

Go to your local animal shelters..if there are none on premises, you can usually fill out a wish card. They'll call you when one comes in so you can have a meeting with the dog to see if he/she will be right to you. Putting an ad in the paper is sometimes effective too-be sure to mention you want to ADOPT and have the dog examined by a vet prior to taking possession.
Most states also have a retriever rescue. See if you can find it on the internet or email me with the state you live and I'll see if I can find a reputable one.
The chances that you'll get one only a few months old could be few and far between but they are easily trained and very obedient. We've never had a problem adopting them and retraining them...they work to please.
Also-they needs lots of attention and care and tend to be high maintenance. They need lots of attention and family time. Be sure you research the breed characteristics before you made your decision.
Best of all-hope you get a dog to love soon.

ASPCA or humane society. Or you can adopt old grey hounds that can't race anymore and need loving homes. Whichever, please choose one of these because in most states these dogs will be put down if not adopted. All they need is TLC. DON'T buy purebreds from the local pet store. They usually come from "puppy factories" and are so inbred that they have health problems.

Use http://www.petfinder.com
You can put in your zip code and even the type of dog breed you want and it will locate all the dogs that are available for adoption that meet your criteria near you. It's a wonderful service and something like 70% of all animal shelters are on it.

there is a place that only adopts out golden retrievers--put Golden retriever adoptions in your search bar and go from there
PLEASE do not go to a breeder and pay money for the dog--there are plenty of homeless puppies who need homes--

Shelter Shelter Shelter. No backyard breeders in the newspaper. No pet stores (ever heard of a puppy mill?). Shelter. Preferably a no kill as they are often THE most underfunded and crowded.
