The doctor can inject his mouth with a numbing solution, but it doesn't always last long enough, but if it were my child I would have to dentist numb it. You never know if your child will have an adverse reaction to the gas.

I am a dental assistant and I have to ask why he is opposed to Nitrous? It is mixed with oxygen so it is not harmful. They will obviously use a local, this goes without saying. I.V. sedation? I dont see this being done on a 5 yr. old for simple fillings. Try going to a dentist that can do oral sedation. It is a liquid that they drink at the office and it make them very sleepy. But please let you husband know that the nitrous is safe and may help you son get through the fillings better.

Don't do Nitrous Gas, my daughter had that, and it freaked her out. She's is 6 yrs old. She said it was hard to breathe and she was having a panic attack while on the nitrous gas. She cried and your son will feel everything being done to him. If we ever have to go through this again I would recommended doing an IV. Won't see, hear or feel anything done to them. But remember they will be asleep for a long time afterwards.
GOOD LUCK!!1

My 5 year old daughter had to get her cavity filled and the dentist used nitrous oxide- it's just laughing gas, but at a very low dosage; enough to relax her. She did just fine. If you use the needle to inject the numbing stuff, your son may never go back to the dentist.

It's either that or taking him to the hospital so they can put him out (all the way) with anesthesia to do the fillings. Just give him the nitrous..it wears off in about an hour. Don't be one of those crazy parents who puts the dentist through all sorts of crap just because you're worried about some silly gas. If you want to avoid this kind of decision, don't let your kid get cavities.

I guess I would be interested it in knowing exactly what the risks of the gas are...
my son had to have a pulpectomy (like a root canal) at that age, and we did the nitrous...no problems, didn't really know of any risks when we went ahead with it. But I understood that for regular fillings at that age, they typically used just local numbing agents.
Do consider going to a pediatric dentist who specializes in kids' procedures.

Our dentist used nitrous at the beginning so that the Novocaine shots weren't so scary. It worked, my son didn't cry, and he was pain free. My son wasn't knocked out, just a little loopy for a few minutes.

My 4 year old had several filling with only a local injection. He never complained of pain and is not afraid of dentists. I wouldn't knock out my little one with gas - sounds scary.

My 3 year old just had this done a month ago...what our dentist did was prescribe this medication that makes them just the slightest bit drowsy (about the equivalent of NyQuil) to give to him one hour before the appointment and then he was able to sit still to have Novocaine injections for it. It worked out really well for us.
