I just want to buy him something or give him somethign as a little surprise, just to remind him that I love him.
Nothing expensive or too extravagant, just something that reminds him how much I love him and will be a lovely surprise for him.

Think of what he might like. Does he like books, football, the arts, greyhound racing??!!! Get him something accordingly. Actually sometimes I get my boyfriend a bunch of flowers, you'd be surprised how guys can appreciate that and not think it's wimpy. Depends on the man. Just don't leave everything until Valentine's Day and forget him for the rest of the year. Some people do that. You don't always have to buy something, a hug and a friendly ear is free and often that's what someone needs after a hard day...

Find out from his mum or someone like that if there was a particular present he wanted one christmas or birthday that he didn't get.If its nothing to obscure or expensive have a look on ebay and see if you can get it.
An ex did this for me once and I thought it was one of the best things anyone had ever done for me.
