We want to get a Great Dane but everyone I know says we don't have enough room for one. I have seen people keep them in apts and they were fine. I have a townhouse and a small yard but we have a local dog park and are an active couple. Does anyone know about how much space a dane takes up, what energy level they have, and if one would be ok in this environment?

Yea!! Great Danes are the best! You will be fine as long as you utilize the resources you spoke of. (Dogpark, etc...)

We always had them growing up and I will have them again someday soon! They are the sweetest dogs, you feel so safe with one, and the energy level is average.

I'm super jealous!! Lucky!! *pout

I think you will be fine; if you have the dog park, etc. I heard that Great Danes have a moderate energy level when they are adults. If you have a small apt. you might find him underfoot a lot.

Keep in mind food costs, medical costs will be more. To treat a Great Dane they will need a lot more medicine that say, a pomeranian. Their flea treatment, etc. will be more too. Just something to keep in mind :)

Yeah, I have heard great danes do fine in a small space, you just need to make sure to walk them at least once a day. With the dog park nearby, I'm sure a great dane would be fine.

Danes are great family pets and it is true that they do not need a lot of room but, I will tell you this from experience......In a small apartment they can take up a lot of space. Also something else to think about..........It cost more to care from them because of thier enormous size so, things like heartworm and flea prevention can get kinda pricey. There food intake when they are pups is a good bit but, they actually level out when they hit adulthood. They definitely need to be on a good quality food specialized for extra large breeds. This can prevent joint problems later. Everything will be more expensive even toys, kennels, ect. I personally think it is worth it but just want you to be aware.
We had an european dane that looked down to drink out of our kitchen sink. He would step over the back of my couch one leg at a time without jumping. I have to say that he was the greatest dog with children. My son was one at the time and my dane would be asleep on the couch or floor and my son would just go over and flop down on him (being a baby) and this dog would not even blink an eye. He was soooo great. My son would just crawl all over him and he loved it. One time he jumped in my lap while I was sitting in a recliner and the whole thing flipped over. I wish I would have had a camera. And yes they are lap dogs!!!!! Ours slept in the bed with us and would stretch out and push my husband off the bed.......happy dog.....unhappy husband. Ha Ha

So, just think about it long and hard and good luck with your decision.
Oh, danes are usually pretty quite dogs but they can develop seperation anxiety too.

Yes, I had a champion Great Dane. Sharcoms Dana, They do not need alot of room, they are very loving and very loyal. They have a normal energy level and love to be around people, however, females can get a little protective. The only downside to them is there average life span is six years, ours lived till she was eight. Have a great day...

They don't need a lot of room - you should be fine.
They take up as much room as they can on the couch.

they are very lazy dogs, but will occassionaly get the "zoomies" just run back and forth or around in circles for no apparent reason.

I've owned as many as 3 great danes at one time.

I've rescued two and the last one I saw placed in a town home - and is doing just fabulous there!

Well usually a big dog doesnt't like small homes but I think that as long as ya'll are active and you take it to that park every day for about an hour or so it will be fine.

Puppies will be puppies! Past that, an adult Dane only needs a couch and his people!
