They use their energy in bursts. There is a biochemical reason for it, and the most extreme case is crocodiles.
I won't go too much into it, just remember cats come from a region with warm climate and all such cats (lions, panthers, leopards) are quite "lazy" and need to save energy for when they need it.

They sleep from 18-20 hours a day, naturally. They conserve energy for hunting. Even a housebound cat retains these natural behaviors even if they don't have to hunt. It's just the way they are :)

Because most of them are. They are independent animals that think they can (and they usually can) do any thing they want to. They view themselves as roalty will eat and sleep whenever they can. With them being able to do anything they want, when they can sleep is all the time. So they take advantage of being royalty by sleeping.
