First off, I just want to say Congratulations! I am ALSO getting married on August 11th, 2007! :-) Some ways that we are saving money:

- Going though our entire house and selling everything we no longer need/want on ebay (I have done this a few times in the past and I have made atleast a thousand dollars each time selling old clothes, CD's, DVD's, etc. People buy lots of weird stuff so dont throw anything away!)

- Not going out as much. We are going to only go out once every other week, so two times a month. this is going to save us like $150 each month!

- Renting movies instead of going to them.

- I joined Sam's club and and bought a ton of groceries to last us awhile so we aren't going to the store for one thing and then ending up leaving with A TON of stuff we dont really need.

- Also, Bank of America has this deal where if you have a checking and a savings account with them, they will round each purchase you make with your check card up to the nearest dollar and then deposit that amount in your savings. They then match that amount up to $250 a year! It's like a virtual piggy bank and they are matching it! PLUS - it's a lot easier to balance your check book with all those .00's!! :-)

Good luck!

Amanda

Sit down with your fiance and decide what is important to you and what isn't. Skip anything that isn't important to you. Your guest list is a huge factor that contributes to your budget. If you can cut the list to your nearest and dearest, you will be best off. If you can't cut anyone, your best bet is to have a cake and coffee reception at a non-meal time. Contrary to popular belief, that is not considered rude or cheap because all weddings everywhere used to be like that, at the most formal weddings even. Whatever you do, don't charge your guests for anything. Sundays and Fridays are not always cheaper. In some areas they may be but that isn't true everywhere. If you can get married Monday-Thursday, you will save a ton of money because no one gets married on those days. Skip the alcohol if possible. Use candles instead of flowers for centerpieces at an evening reception. If a full meal is non-negotiable, look in to catering from Boston Market or a favorite local restaurant. Those are way cheaper than wedding caterers and you would already know that the food is good.

Well, you've got a year, can you get an extra job, even working 12 hours a week can add up quickly. Don't even spend that money, just put it in an account for the wedding.

Also, you don't say how short on cash you are, but you'd be surprised with a few spending cuts how much extra money you have at the end of the month. Look at your spending, and take it down to the bare bones, what you have to have to live on. With gas as high as it is, don't drive as much, maybe even join a car pool to work. There's lots of ways you can save $$, you just have to be disciplined enough to do it. Congrats on thinking about this now, you have no idea how many people go through their wedding planning just whipping out their credit cards, and then get the shock of their lives when the bills are due. Best wishes to you and good luck!

Get a good job, cut living expenses, and avoid planning a celebrity-style wedding you cannot afford. Advertisers in the wedding indutry try to sell brides all kinds of ridiculous, unnecessary things and try to make you think it's traditional to have a big fancy ostentatious wedding, when it actually more traditional to have a modest wedding. Think "Simple elegance."

Books I recommend for wedding planning and money management (check library or cheap sites like half.com or powells.com):

Miss Manners on Weddings
The Everything Wedding Planning Book
How to Survive Without a Salary
The Complete Cheapskate

I can't believe people above are telling you to have a greenback shower or beg for money! That is disgusting and I hope you have better manners than to extort money from others!

Dog walk. Detail cars. Trim hedges. Babysit. Work part time. Mow lawns. Paint. Wallpaper.

Stop spending money on eating out and on vending machines.

Sell things on eBay or craigslist. Ask a wealthy relative if they can spare $250 toward your wedding.

Take any money you have and invest it in a 6 month CD. Ask about it at your local bank. My fiance and I are doing this with our wedding savings. It's got a much higher interest rate than a plain old savings account and we invest what we can. The interest we earn is nice too, I mean it's only 50 bucks here, 50 bucks there, but hey, it's free money. Go for it.

My husband and I had a huge garage sale to help with raising some money. We went to his parents and cleaned out their garage of stuff and ours and made almost a thousand dollars. I also did a lot of internet searching for wedding items on a budget. Just plan ahead and think about whats most important to you both and get those things first and let the rest fall into place.

Sell stuff on the internet. Find a product you can resell, and have it dropshipped. Hardly any work, and has great money potential. Start your own business. If you work hard, then you can make a lot more money than if you would working at any other job. Something like housecleaning can even bring in extra cash!

Get a part-time job.
Sell on Ebay.
Check your budget and make you sure you look at what you are buying. Do you really need it?

If you want that wedding, you will get it.

Also, check out for alternatives for the wedding. Would it be cheaper to get a dress from a consignment store? Make your invitations?

I made chocolate lollipops, and baskets of chocolate for each of the holidays during the year I was paying for my wedding. I made a lot of extra money doing that as well as OT at work - so it all came in handy. good luck!
