You can only be sectioned under the Mental Health Act if you pose a danger to yourself or others. 'Danger' means that you might cause any degree of harm to yourself or others owing to your mental state.

You cannot be sectioned because (for example) you bounce down the road on a pogo stick saying 'I'm a rabbit - give me a lettuce', although many people will say you're as mad as a hatter.

You can be sectioned by a psychiatric nurse for 3 hours pending the arrival of a doctor who is then able to section you for 72 hours during which time you will be assessed by 2 doctors and a social worker. If they then decide that the section should stand they can section you for 6 weeks. Following a six week section there's a six month section.

You can appeal against a 6 week or 6 month section.

Whilst sectioned under the Mental Health Act, you are not permitted to leave the place which is holding you without a doctor's permission. To do so would be a criminal offence and you could be arrested.

In the UK there is no such thing as a section 6. People are usually detained under a 2, 3 or a 72.
Also "originalbake" you are wrong! I am currently sectioned under the mental health act and I have access to this site.

The only way you can be sectioned under the Mental Health Act is if 2 doctors and a Social Worker, think you are a risk to yourself or others!

I can't find a section 6 but I have put in a link to the hyper guide of the mental health act. It explains all the different sections in the UK there is a section 36.

Hope this helps.

A lot of reasons.

The common one with elderly people is that they are unable to look after themselves properley anymore, and are considered a danger to themselves.

Put simply though - they are either considered a danger to themselves or to others.

Dont be stupid.

There's no way someone who's been sectioned could have access to this site.
