I haven't personally experienced this phenomena however both my parents seem to have. My father "died" on the operating table for a full minute exactly during a 12 hour back surgery. He was revived and reported that a woman in glowing white, appearing to him as though it were my mother, backed by an intense white light stood beside him at the table, holding his hand and telling him that he would be going with her soon but for now he must stay as he would be needed more than ever before by a member of his family.

Approx a year later, at 34, my mother experienced an equally life changing experience when she entered the hospital for a routine hysterectomy and "died" upon the operating table for a period of 3 minutes. During this time she insisted that she had entered into the "green pastures" as described in the Bible and was met by a male angel. This angel told her that she mustn't come with him at this time as she had to live the life she had failed to live before now. She would be ever changed and would become the strength within her family. She was to return to live her life in such a way that it would provide a witnessing to others that prior to their meeting, could never have existed due to her inability to accept.

When she finally was revived, she remained in a coma for 3 days during which time my father was extremely worried, he wasn't at all prepared to lose a second wife to death. When she regained consciousness, she sat up in the hospital bed during monitoring of her vitals by a nurse, and recited the 24th Psalm. Needless to say the Nurse was petrified, never expecting the coma patient to either sit up or talk so suddenly.

For the first 4 weeks after this, despite doctors telling my father she might have irreversible brain damage, she functioned as she had normally except for the fact that she was continuously euphoric...completely changed from who she had been previously. Her prior state had been that of moody, sullen, hysterical, bitter tangents. Now she was an actual pleasure to be around. One late night she took some type of an attack and was rushed into the hospital. Her words were badly slurred, she had no control over her motor skills and she recognized no one.

Eventually, diagnosed with MS (Multiple Sclerosis) which very recently was discovered to be scarring on her brainstem instead, quite treatable today by laser surgery, which she refuses because she is happy now with herself, her life (She lives in a nursing care home and her opportunities to help others there), and she has continued to improve almost daily where speech, movement and self care are concerned. During the worst period of this illness, my father was devoted, dedicated and relentless in his duty to care for her and keep her at home, his life had always been one of selflessness and giving. While fulfilling what he knew to be his "Angels" prophecy, he began to prepare for death...which to say the least was extremely scary for me, who would not accept that my father would ever leave me. He collapsed from an aneurysm that burst within his brain, suddenly one day while caring for my mother and while his mother was visiting. When paramedics attempted to take him to the hospital he regained consciousness and signed a waiver that in effect stated he was refusing their help or that of being transported to the hospital for help. Only minutes after they left, he collapsed again and never regained consciousness.

Once my mother had become totally dependent upon my father, she had reverted to her anger filled ways and was impossible to placate, seemingly having forgotten her experience with death. Upon my fathers death, she removed all his funds from the bank, sent it to the place she'd been originally born and returned there to be with her immediate family, leaving her 3 children to fend as best they could on their own without financial support and without parental guidance. We were 20, 16 and 14 at the time of my fathers death and her departure.

When she finally began to improve health-wise and somewhere along the way she came out of the fog that was hatred, self pity and denial, she brought with her the outcome that her Angel had claimed she'd be bringing to others. She has been a devout witness for God, and she has never waivered from that path. Although she did not become a mother in the true sense of the word, to us, her children, she did take on the challenge of paying for Ministery education for a nephew of hers and support two sisters and a brother who at the time, were appreciative of her support.

Unfortunately, all of the episodes and difficulties we as her children experienced in the early part of this illness piled on top of trying to overcome the loss of our father, were instances that were all shoved to the dark recesses of her brain and to this day, over 20 years later, she still does not or cannot recall her less than loving actions towards us. However, fortunately for her, we have never abandoned her as our mother although it has been extremely difficult to overcome for my brothers.

Although I personally have not had just one belief system in place for some time now, which works well for me, I do respect her and her beliefs and actually do believe as well, that both my parents, not prone ever to my knowledge to invent, create or otherwise draw up colourful stories, would or could create such "prophecies" as they did for each of them.

So, yes, I believe these were accurate and I think that for my parents they were not only interesting, but somehow, reassuring that the other side was something not to be feared. These were episodes they both needed to be able to lean on I guess.
