I have had about 30 cats over a span of almost as many years.

There is no magic food that you can set out, just put out whatever his normal food is, and water. I'm assuming that this is an outdoor cat, or an indoor cat with outdoor priveleges.

If the cat is older (I mean, like 10 years or more), he might wander away for a day or two and still come back.

I know, it's distressing, but it also doesn't really help to dwell on it. If he never comes back, you can take comfort that he was probably outdoors, doing what he enjoyed most. But I'll keep a good thought for you.

Don't worry. Its normal for a cat to hide when they're in a new home. Go out and buy a can of tuna or canned cat food or grab some meat out of your refrigerator that he can smell. Leave some of it out and leave the house for a little while. He will feel safe when the house is quiet. I bet when you come back, the food will be gone. At least you'll know that he's alive. When I adopted my cat, he hid for 3 days. I know he came out at night while we were asleep, because the food bowl was empty every morning and there was pee and poop in the litter box. Just give him a little time and he'll be your best buddy before you know it.

I would try some kitty treats, shaking the box that you keep the food in and calling to the cat. Put some cat treats out like the old story of hansel and gretel ( I know it sounds stupid but it works), I have three cats. For future times, keep a can of tuna or salmon on hand ($.57-$1.00 is worth the cost versus the headache of losing the cat.)

Is he lost inside or outside? Try running the can opener or opening a can of tuna if he is inside. If he is outside all you can really do is wait- he won't come home until he is ready. You could try the tuna because it has such a strong smell. Good luck.

Nisofu,

Cats are very smart. They will do a disappearing act every few years but they always come home and act like nothing happened.

He'll be fine.

No, just sit on your doorstep talking, rattle his food bowls and stick notices on your nearby lamp-posts to ask people to check their sheds.
