Because the thumb is opposable. The big toe isn't. This characteristic sets it apart from the rest of the fingers, thus it is actually not a finger.

Um, maybe because the thumb is different from other fingers because it is opposable, so you can pinch and pick up things, and the big toe is just another toe. I'm guessing here--never thought about it before!

That is an amazing question. I don't really know. Maybe it's because your thumb is on the side of your hand or whatever, and your big toe is on the front of yor foot with the rest of your toes? Sorta seems that someone just called it that a long time ago, and it just stuck.

The thumb is opposable, meaning it can work opposite of your fingers, like when you grab a bottle, pick up a toothpick, etc. Your big toe is just another toe, whose main function is to keep your balance.
