I'm assuming you want to type in MS Word or some document-oriented program. Go to Tools > Langauge > Set Language.
If you want to be able to type French characters in all programs you will have to change your Keyboard and Language settings on your computer.

Use any font. Change your keyboard type to French. Play around to learn the layout as it does differ from US or UK English.
