I have been bleaching my hair for the past few months I really want to go brown or red? But everytime I did it in the past the color would wash right out. The color would fade fast! I Have been coloring my own hair for the past 9 years. I am not sure how much it would cost to go get it done?

Red is the toughest color to keep fresh, as red color molecules are bigger than those of darker shades. Any color with a red base (many browns fall into this category) fade quickly, especially if shampoos and conditioners used afterward aren't specifically for tinted hair.

If you attempt to go darker now, *don't* be tempted to skip the instructions on doing a strand test. Bleached hair is notorious for "grabbing" darker colors and processing much faster than non-bleached hair. (Same with very dry, permed, or sun-damaged hair.) It's also common for bleach to produce unexpected results when coloring over it - brassiness, greenish cast, etc. So the strand test is essential, even if you used the same chestnut brown many times before with fabulous results.

The safest thing would be to save up some cash and have a professional do it. He/she will analyze your hair's condition and apply a deep conditioner or filler before the color service, if needed. Unfortunately, it's been years since I worked in my mom's salon, so I can't provide a good estimate on the cost anymore.

Whatever you decide, good luck!

Your hair is probably really porous, which means your hair cuticle is wide open. Before you color do a couple of mouisurizing treatments, you can find them at sally's beauty supply. I like Ion protien therepy because the protien helps fill in your hair shaft. A good way to test your hair porosity is take a couple of strands and put them in a cup of water if they float your good to go if they sink it means that your hair is still really porous. Next be careful when you pick a color, you will probably need to prime your hair with a red and gold tones before you go brown.. If you do it at home get the brightest red you can get off the shelf.. it should be kinda orangy..Then go with a shade lighter than you the brown you want because your hair might still grab the color pretty strong. Finally buy a good color care shampoo it wil keep your hair healthy and prolong your color. Good Luck!

You really need to go get it done professionally because apparently something your doing isn't right. It usually costs about $50. But of course thats just for me.
