You can go to www.avast.com and download their free home antivirus program, or you can go to www.grisoft.com and download their free antivirus program, AVG free for personal use. (The AVG, has limitations, you can only scan once per day and they don't update the free version frequent). I would go for the avast free as it updates frequent and you can scan as much as you wish. For a free back-up that supports your virus system you can go to www.emsisoft.com and download their free version of their anti-malware program. This will give you added protection with no conflict with the primary antivirus program. emsisoft will protect you from rogue dialers, an all other malware. They give you frequent updates an is free.

If you want the program I use an I consider it the very best in the world, you must pay a small one time fee and you will get frequent updates for life including any new versions. (You will not find any antivirus/spyware program that does not charge you an annual fee). www.filseclab.com --Twister Anti-TrojanVirus, Beijing, China. This program has real time protection in the background that really works. Uses very little of your cpu power. An if you should open a web page with embedded trojans/spyware it will clean on the spot. If you download any kind of program and there is embedded viruses in the program Twister, will stop the download, clean virus an even trace back the source of the virus. Plus it even find hidden embedded trojans in the installer software used to install/quide you through the installation of the program and will stop the installation and clean.

Hope this helps you. You have to search hard for the AVG free on their website, but it is there I just checked.

AVG i believe would be the best free virus scan available. It isn't a system resource hog, their definitions are update frequently, and all together it's a nice user friendly virus scanner you can download it:
