I am anal retentive about this. I chop the card horizontal through the numbers then chop it into bits. Then, I hide some bits inside discarded food or fruit where no one will take the time to look. Then, I throw the rest into a seperate bag with everyday garbage.

cut it up in small pieces with scissors so it can't be matched up again...and when you throw it out in the trash put parts of it in two different trash bags.
Some shreaders have a compartment on them to shread credit cards. If you have one of those shreaders make sure it goes thru the shreader properly or else the numbers on the card will remain intact.

I used to take a lighter and melt the numbers but now I just run them through my shredder.
