In a WC cubicle at the WI, a member let off a tremendous fa rt and when she came out to wash her hands and saw us there she said "Oh, sorry I made a faux pas". I think the social error she made was mentioning it- We weren't going to say anything.

You're right - she should not have acknowledged it. In this instance the lady in question actually did nothing wrong as she was in the toilet at the time. If you can't pass wind in a toilet, then where on earth can you???

You're right Harriet! She shouldn't have said anything, walked out trying to appear dignified, even though she felt the opposite. As for ' a faux pas' it means a false step! That was no false step but a natural (If embarrassing) sound that her body was getting rid of gas due to the formation of the bolus! But same thing happened when i walked into a 5 stars hotel ... Went to the toilets, only two cubicles, a woman did the same thing, looked at me and said "Really! Some people" when there were only two people in the toilets, her and me! Need i say ... It wasn't me but her!

You are correct. The only polite thing to do when someone makes a social error is to pretend they didn't. Bringing attention to it compounds the error. On the other hand, I do hope you didn't then compound her error by making her feel unhappy about her admission.

If one has embarrassed oneself, one gets over it in one's own way. The lady's remark covered an unpleasant situation and allowed everyone to smile legitimately.

Everybody farts, and everyone has an anus. If we didn't fart, we'd explode. How silly we are about our bodies and their natural functions.
