You can ask them to give you a little topical anesthetic, but it's still going to hurt. You may also want them to have someone hold you still if you're a person who flinches when something hurts you.

DEMAND that the doctors check your eyes before they do a lumbar puncture. Tell them to rule out increased intracranial pressure before they get the needle anywhere close to your back.

I've had one. The needle hurt like hell, and for two weeks after, every time I stood up, an excruciating pain shot through my head.
