Christians...
How far is too far with changing what God created?
Such as for instance...
coloring of the hair. Is that ok? Is that contrary to God's Word ...and how?
If that is ok,...what about tatooes, peircings, or how about the forbidden liposuction...?
What is ok and what is not? Is it ok for one person and not the other....
And who decides....you?...God?....how...
tell me your views!

If you are REAL conservative,...than what about makeup...?
Is THAT ok for a Christian to wear?
Would taking a shower with scented shower gel be changing the "natural scent" of the body God created?.....
Tell me...

My belief and understanding is that God is not concerned with such things as much as some of us Real conservatives would like to believe. The Bible says that a Christian's body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, and we should honor it with that respect. That, to me, means that we should protect it and care for it, and not defile it (to make it unclean). When it comes to hair dye, makeup, tattooes and piercings, these things are usually matters that are personal between the individual and God himself. The individual needs to ask themselves why they want to pierce their nose, or dye their hair. How will this bring glory to God? Same thing with liposuction - is it a matter of vanity, or a health-related issue. The problem with these issues is that society wants to make everything a black/white, true/false answer. I don't believe this is so with God. With God, everything is a matter of the HEART. The Bible says, if a person thinks that something is a sin, then for him it is a sin. That is how we are to deal with issues that are not directly addressed in the Bible. So, if the Bible doesn't talk about hair dye, but Andrew believes with his heart that dyeing his hair would be a sin, then that is a sin for him. But that doesn't mean it would be a sin for Craig. Of course, God's IDEAL is that everything be done for the glory of His kingdom, and I don't see how tattooes or piercings would REALLY bring God glory?.... Hope that helps

Christianity is about a relationship with God through Jesus Christ, Who eliminated fear of judgmentalism from the rules and regulations about which you ask. You have free will to make these choices, and the freedom in Christ to take such actions, all of which are ornamental.
Going too far with changing what God created would be if you make an idol of such external changes.

Nevertheless, there is a close tie between "fear of man" and the desire for certain types of appearances. It is for you to see into yourself clearly by seeking Jesus before anything else. As a mature individual, one must have the forsight to make wise decisions about potentially permanent changes. As a responsible adult, one need not be concerned about one person or another. That would be catering to what other's think, another form of idloatry.

To be specific, piercings and tatoos are permanent. But if it is a statement reflecting what you know will endure in your life, then that is cool! It is not like you are trying to force others to be vegetarians or possibly compromising another's thoughts by dressing provocatively. Liposuction is potentially dangerous and a quick fix for something usually best accomplished gradually. Hair is just plain fun for many, regardless of what kind of changes. Even if you want to go crazy hair to shock a few stick-in-the-muds, that could be valid, and certainly Jesus would have a sense of humor about it. Well, unless you have a job that could be compromised.

Seek God first in your life. Ask His Spirit to search you. Be confident in the unique person God made you to be. Then if you want to take action for the extras that should by all rights, be glad expression of available choices, it is your decision. It can be a long uncertain road to get to the point where you have discernment that God is at the core of your decisions, but there is no better course than to make it your goal. Then the views of strangers or well-meaning, but misguided aquaintances will become superfluous to making your choices.

"The fear of man brings a snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD will be safe." (Proverbs 29:25)

Most non-permanent things should up to the individual as long as it is not offencive (such as shaving racist slogans in your hair), similar questions were asked in the bible and the asnwer was to judge for yourself. However, my PERSONAL opinion is that permenant changes that change the body from what would be normal or natural are not good. I consider the body to be a temple and should not be defaced with graffiti. Liposuction, if I understand correctly just remove fat from the body, but do not result in anything abnormal, so therefore in my opinon would be OK. Putting a 10cm disc in your lip, which changes the body from what can be considered normal or natural in my opinion is defacing the body, likewise with tattoos.

The only prohibitions that I can recall offhand about personal appearance under the New Covenant are: "Your beauty should not be an external one, consisting of braided hair or the wearing of gold ornaments and dresses. Instead, it should be the inner disposition of the heart, consisting in the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great value in the sight of God." (I Peter 3:3-4)

And

"Women, for their part, should display their beauty by dressing modestly and decently in appropriate clothes, not by braiding their hair or by wearing gold, pearls, or expensive clothes, but through good works. This is proper for women who claim to have reverence for God." (I Timothy 2:9-10)

That doesn't really prohibit these things, but if that is your beauty, then it is not at all acceptable to God. He is more interested in your character, not your superficial appearance.

As to the other things, I leave it up to the individual and God.

We are all vain and we all have egos. When it comes to any of these things, I think we have to ask ourselves how it benefits us and how it promotes the Lord. If we begin to obsess over our vanity or if it becomes a financial burden to us or our family, then it probably runs into the "sin barrier".

I don't think getting a tattoo is a sin (unless it's vulgar or pornographic or some sort of "pagan" ritual) but personally, I have no interest in it. The same with body piercing. I'd love to shluck an inch or two off my waistline but I could do that with a little more exercise (and much lower cost). I hate to sound like a moral relativist (and will likely be accused of it) and I know that the body is a temple to the Lord, but I don't think He minds as long as you remain dedicated to Him first with these things being less important.

I wonder why Christians think it is OK to drive cars when we all know that preachers in the 19th century and early 20th century denounced cars as Satanic and to say that they could have been wrong then is to say that today's preachers could be wrong today, which of course is impossible. Preachers inerrantly discern the will of God and when they tell us that something like the automobile, the railroad, radio, television, films, rock n roll, skateboarding, etc all are horrible sins, they are of course correct so none of those things should even exist. No medicine, either! In fact, America is not even mentioned in the Holy Bible, so no decent God believing Christian should stay here one minute longer: they should leave all their evil material possessions (cars, TV's, houses, swimming pools etc) here, for me, and go immediately to the Holy Land and help with whatever the present struggle is there now.

The bible tells me, as a woman, not to let braided hair or jewelry, etc. be what I'm focused on. It teaches that a woman should seek inner beauty, which comes most of all from loving God and loving and serving others.

That being said, loving others means, in my book, not causing them to have heart attacks. If I don't wear makeup....that could be a serious problem. *wink*

Nothing wrong with caring what you look like. There is a problem when you become obsessed with it.

The bible does say not to cut or put markings on yourself. That being said, Paul also wrote that "all things are allowable (for us as believers)...but not all things are expedient." I think we need to consider what we do...might it affect others? As a born again believer in Christ, it's not all about "us" anymore. We need to be respectful of others. Don't do something that would offend another, purposefully. Would piercings or tattoos do that? That's for you to decide. I wouldn't do it.

HA HA, what in the world? Of course we can wear makeup, change our hair or use scented shower jell! Why not?? God didn't clap his hands and make cupcakes, but there's no law saying we can't eat them.

God made each of us individual and I highly doubt with all the things we sinners are doing, changing our hair is the last thing on His mind!

Hi wildflower,

We know that God knows all things and that includes our hearts. i'm a youth pastor and over the years i've had to deal with this issue. i've had kids who have colored their hair-- they love it, their parents don't.

i myself personally had an earring. At the time i was reminded that OT servants would pierce their ears as allegiance to their master- and it was actually a great topic of discussion and a great way to share with my non-Christian friends about Christ.

i've also had youth kids who have wanted to get Tats and i usually ask them what they want to get it of and why?

The key principal i can give you is you have liberty in Christ. However, you need to be careful that your liberty doesn't cause another person to stumble.

i think if changing the color of your hair caused non-stop fights between you and your parents- it's not a big thing to sacrifice your liberty.

5 years ago i took a job as a youth pastor at a Baptist church where i currently serve and the adults asked me to remove my earring. i gladly did it because i understood that some of the youth would want to get earrings and for different reasons and it was also associated with being "thugish". i miss my earring sure- but it's far less important than other people. Jesus always thought about other people first.

One of my good buddies just got a tattoo. i asked what he wanted the tattoo of and he said a cross. i said that's great, just wear sleeves over it on Sundays so that some of the Older adults aren't stumbled by it. For others who have said i want a dragon or tiger, cuz i'm fierce, etc. i really ask them to question whether that is something that is good, building ourselves up instead of others... etc.

So i hope this helps... you have freedom but sometimes you sacrifice that for the sake of other people... Search your motives and ask the Holy Spirit and some close Christian friends who can give you good counsel...

God Bless,

Nickster
