Bruce Lee. He may have been an actor, but he was also a serious martial artist, that was decades ahead of his time. The entire UFC is basically concepts he was talking about over thirty years ago.
Whether people believe he was the real thing or an overhyped actor, one thing is true, the entire martial arts community owes him a huge debt. It was his movies that were the genesis for the huge explosion in the interest in Eastern martial arts that continues today.

The greatest martial artist is one that allows himself no limits. One that trains and will not allow themselves to lose. And one that will take there morals in stride with their training. To keep ones morals in tact and still be able to fight with heart, soul, and power is what is needed to achieve your highest goal. I hear this from my friend and i bet there are more people out here taht work in the martial arts with these goals tehse are the greatest martial artists these are true warriors. Not these morons that think crushing some ones skull is the key to winning. Thats so untrue crushing some ones skull is the way to inner peace. Its living your hardest and strongest to kick as much a.s.s. as possible and carrying on with your morals in tact that makes you a Warrior. But if you want a single person since the only person i know with these morals is one man Stev! although not a lot better at the martial arts than I he is the one who gave me the driving force to strive for my goals and reinforced my morals that is what makes the greatest martial artist!

I'm sure that many would answer Bruce Lee. However, the greates martial artist to have ever lived is likely to be some one that hardly anybody has heard of. In other words, some unknown peasant that lived in Asia.

Frank Shamrock. www.frankshamrock.com - undefeated as a middleweight in the UFC - there is also Martin "Farmer" Burns; he was probably America's first mixed martial arts fighter and had over 6,000 fights! Bruce Lee without a doubt was incredible but never competed in a tournament so maybe he was better but he never proved that in real contests. Also, Frank Dux is worth mentioning - he is the real guy that the movie Bloodsport was about and he still holds world records for kicking speed and for fastest knockout in a Kumite but Frank Shamrock is probably the best ever based on the video of some of his fights. If, by martial artist, you mean any martial activity (which would be as varied as unarmed, firing a gun, or driving a tank), it is almost impossible to say.

If you are talking armed or unarmed combat, Miyamoto Musashi. He is the greatest swordsman who ever lived.

If you mean unarmed combat, then (with my own personal bias, me being in JKD and all) I would say The Dragon, Bruce Lee.
