There's no such thing as "American Style" karate. Karate is wholely Japanese and anyone claiming an "american style" is a pretender who took several different Japanese techniques from actual styles (like Goju ryu, Shorei ryu, Shotokan, etc.) added in some Tae Kwon Do and various Kung Fu moves that they liked and claimed them as their own style. It's really rather sad.

American style Karate is Japanese Karate that has been changed and mixed in with alot of other stuff (junk). If you want to study Karate then I would suggest going to a REAL Karate Dojo, one that teaches Okinawan Karate.
You may ask, why take an art that is centuries old and change it? They will tell you...
- to make it work in modern times
- to get rid of all of the japanese culture
- We don't bow here in America
The truth is that (most) of these places are run by people who could not or would not open a school under the Japanese Karate foundations. They may know some martial arts, but its NOT Karate.
Tae-Kwon-Do Dojangs have started calling themselves Karate because Tae-Kwon-Do doesn't have a good name and they can sell a name like Karate. Those places are teaching you Tae-Kwon-Do and calling it Karate to get more money out of you.
Bottom line - If the school is called a DOJANG or has a Korean "Master" than it's not Karate. If the school isn't backed by a major Japanese Karate foundation than it's not Karate.
Find a REAL Karate school, learn alot and have fun.

That is to say bringing karate to mainstream America.
He trained Elvis Presley and other well known film Stars.

Joe Louis is another top notch Full contact Karate competitor that
helped bring Karate to the American scene.

Chuck Norris of course helped to make Karate a household word.
