I disagree with the above answer.

Some people just pass protein in their urine without having any underlying illness. These people simply have what's called a low threshold when it comes to protein elimination.

Now, that being said, protein can indicate a problem with how your kidneys are functioning. But like I stated, it can also be a variation of normal.

An illness - when the body breaks down invaders, some protein waste usually remains and has to be expelled through the urine. It could just be a cold or something harmless, though.

it's normally used as an indicator for how well your kidneys are functioning
